What is one bit of advice (or two) that you would tell someone starting out in scrapbooking?

Hmmmm, don't worry about being "in style" with your pages. Do what you like & do what makes you happy. also, don't be afraid to try new things. If you see something you like, try to do it. Sometimes you'll find something you love, sometimes not.

Take a good Scrapbooking 101 class to learn and buy your basics.

I agree too with doing what makes you happy. I think most of us start scrapbooking with a particular purpose - to document our photos and/or to be creative. I do it for both so I think my "style" reflects that but for those who want to just document their photos, their style may be very simple.

I have told new scrapbookers to borrow magazines or idea books from others and to look at what's out there. I also often tell them not to get caught up in buying lots of pp before they get started. I know I bought a LOT of tacky pp when I first started that never got used. Start out with the basics and experiment to see what you enjoy using.
